Grassley Hearing to Investigate Mexican Cooperation in the War on Drugs

Sen. Chuck Grassley announced today he will co-chair a hearing as chairman of the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control to examine Mexico's progress in improving its cooperation with the U.S. in the war on drugs and the need to establish measurable standards to assess the effectiveness of Mexican counter narcotics efforts.
"We need to see major progress in the war on drugs. Mexican cooperation is crucial to fighting the flow of drugs into the U.S.," said Grassley. According to the General Accounting Office, the U.S. provided $87 million in counter narcotics and law enforcement support to Mexico during fiscal years 1996 and 1997.
Rep. Dennis Hastert of Illinois, chairman of the National Security, International Affairs and Criminal Justice Subcommittee of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, will jointly chair the hearing. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. (EST), on March 18, in the Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2154.
