WASHINGTON
– Sen. Grassley today will participate in a memorial ceremony at the U.S. Capitol to commemorate the five-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
“Following the loss of life of innocent civilians and first-responders on September 11, 2001, an immediate outpouring of national unity and generosity flowed from all across America,” Grassley said. “Tonight we will join in the American spirit to pay tribute to the men, women and children who lost their lives and honor the brave soldiers who continue to protect this land of opportunity.”
The event will include the National Anthem played by the Marine Corps Band, an opening prayer by the Senate Chaplain, speeches by the House and Senate leadership, a moment of silence, and the singing of God Bless America, accompanied by the Marine Corps Band.
“As America observes the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, let’s remember the resilient American spirit that unites all Americans from all walks of life,” Grassley said.
Following the events of September 11th, Congress has worked in a bipartisan fashion to compensate victims and survivors and ensure the American people that they would put a stop to terrorism. Since 2001 lawmakers have enacted 71 laws in response to the global war on terror and to strengthen the U.S. military to dismantle terrorist regimes and insurgent groups around the world.
The commemoration event at the U.S. Capitol will air live on C-Span at 5 p.m. (CT).
