Grassley invited the Secret Service to make a presentation on Nov. 21. The Secret Service will share information it gathered in an operational study with the U.S. Department of Education after the spate of school shootings in 1998 and 1999.
In its study, Grassley said the Secret Service gathered and analyzed accurate and useful information about the behavior and thinking of students who committed acts of targeted violence in schools. The study involved a systematic analysis of investigative, judicial, educational and other case records, and it included interviews with ten of the boys involved in the school shootings. In Des Moines, the Secret Service will make available to school and law enforcement professionals its final report and a threat assessment guide for schools.
"School violence is a nationwide concern, and with the help of the Secret Service, I hope to help prevent any problems in Iowa," Grassley said. "More than any other federal law enforcement agency, the Secret Service has proven its effectiveness in preventing criminal activity."
Grassley said the seminar will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 1-3:30 pm, at the downtown Des Moines Marriott Hotel. It is scheduled during the annual convention of the Iowa Association of School Boards to make it convenient for school officials to attend.
