Grassley: John Jarvey Nomination Clears Committee

WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley today said that the nomination of John Jarvey to fill a vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, based in Des Moines, cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The nomination must now be considered by the full Senate.  Grassley, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, said he hopes the Senate will consider the nomination before it recesses at the end of the week.

“I’m confident that Judge Jarvey possesses the skill, integrity, commitment, intellect, and temperament that we expect of all good judges,” Grassley said.  “He has shown tremendous dedication to public service.  I don’t see any reason why the Senate shouldn’t act on his nomination as soon as possible.”

A vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa was created when Chief Judge Ronald Longstaff announced his intention to retire from the bench.  The vacancy is one of three active judgeships on the Southern District Court. The Court has jurisdiction to hear nearly all categories of federal cases, including both civil and criminal matters.

Jarvey is currently the chief U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Iowa.  He was a Trial Attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice from 1983 to 1987; and a Law Clerk to Donald E. O’Brien, the U.S. District Court Judge for the Northern District of Iowa.  He received his J.D. from the Drake University School of Law and a B.S. from the University of Akron.
