Grassley: More than $1.5 million to Iowa from U.S. Department of Homeland Security

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded two grants totaling $1,541,725 to Iowa. The funds are through the Interoperable Emergency Communications Grant Program and the REAL ID Demonstration Grant Program.

“This money will help improve emergency communication during disasters. The recent floods and tornadoes have shown us the importance of working together and communicating with one voice,” Grassley said. “These funds will also be used to help Iowa comply with the REAL ID requirements. The 9/11 commission recommended the changes as an important way to beef up national security and prevent fraud and abuse.”

The grant funds from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be distributed as shown below.

  • $330,399 to Iowa through the Interoperable Emergency Communications Grant Program to improve interoperable emergency communications, including communications in collective response to natural disasters, acts of terrorism and other man-made disasters.
  • $1,211,326 to Iowa to help enhance the integrity of driver’s licenses and identification cards, issuance capabilities, as well as system security.
