WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley today announced his recommendations to fill a vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, based in Des Moines.
Grassley submitted three nominees to the president for U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of Iowa. They include: John A. Jarvey, Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Iowa; Annette J. Scieszinski, Iowa District Court Judge; and Thomas J. Shields, Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Iowa.
“These three individuals have extensive experience and are fully qualified to serve as U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District,” Grassley said.
According to Grassley, President Bush will forward one name for the judgeship to the Senate Judiciary Committee for confirmation hearings.
A vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa was created when Chief Judge Ronald Longstaff announced his intention to retire from the bench. The vacancy is one of three active judgeships on the Southern District Court. The Court has jurisdiction to hear nearly all categories of federal cases, including both civil and criminal matters.
Grassley said that the White House will determine the time frame for the president’s announcement and confirmation proceedings in the Senate will follow. “As a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I will do all I can to expedite the process,” he said.
