? As thousands of Iowa families gather together this week to celebrate the nation's Thanksgiving holiday, Sen. Chuck Grassley today urged Iowans to give pause during their busy travel, school and work schedules to observe National Family Week, which runs Sunday, Nov. 23 through Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997.

With the backing of 53 Senate co-sponsors, Grassley this year shepherded legislation through Congress to designate Nov. 23 - 29 as National Family Week to highlight the importance of the family unit in our society. President Clinton signed the proclamation into public law last Friday.

"The most basic element of our society, it is fitting to give thanks for the family bond that ties us together. It is the strength of any free and orderly society," said Grassley. "Since last Wednesday, all eyes have been focused on Iowa and the remarkable births of the McCaughey septuplets.

"The overwhelming media attention and generosity of relatives, friends, neighbors, and well-wishers have underscored the magnetism that draws each of us to reach out to one incredible Iowa family. May every family in America join the McCaugheys and take the time to count their own family's blessings during National Family Week."

Since 1976, Congress has designated one week each year to commemorate the vital link that families provide in American society. The Senate Resolution deems it appropriate to honor the family unit as essential to the well-being of the United States and calls on the American people to observe the week with appropriate family ceremonies and activities.

Grassley encourages Iowans to make an extra effort this holiday week to "make time for family time. It will help bring families closer together and promote a more peaceful society," he said. "Let's also remember those whose family circumstances are not blessed with joy but with suffering. Giving of one's time to the local food pantry or donating goods and services to neighborhood shelters are especially appropriate shared family activities this time of year."
