Seeking to insure there is no lag in the war on drugs, Sen. Chuck Grassley this week urged Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin to quickly locate and select a candidate to fill the position of Commissioner of the United States Customs Service.

The current commissioner, George J. Weise recently announced his plans to leave his position. Approximately 19,000 individuals work for the Customs Service as agents, inspectors and support personnel.

"Drug use among teens is a significant problem in our country. Our government must be committed to doing everything possible to stop drug use before it starts. Customs plays a crucial role in working to reach this goal. By working to stop drug trafficking at our borders, the Customs Service is a front line agency in the war on drugs," Grassley said.

Grassley also asked the administration to find a candidate with strong background in law enforcement. "As I'm sure you would agree, leading such an agency in these times requires a candidate with proven experience in this area."

Grassley serves as the Chairman of the International Narcotics Control Caucus.
