Grassley Receives Recognition for Work on Child Support

, DC - To recognize his work to improve the collection of child support payments, the National Child Support Enforcement Association (NCSEA) this week presented Sen. Chuck Grassley with its 1999 NCSEA "Legislator of the Year" award.

NCSEA president Richard "Casey" Hoffman complemented Grassley for distinguishing himself through legislative efforts on behalf of child support enforcement. Specifically, he recognized Grassley's successful effort to establish a structure through the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement (OCSE) for state child support agencies to coordinate with financial institutions. Hoffman praised Grassley for finding an "appropriate solution to a complex problem through consensus-building among state agencies, financial institutions, and the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement."

"I am honored to receive this award from such an important group," said Grassley. "We must take great pain to make sure all of our child support laws are being faithfully executed and that parents are being held responsible for their actions. In addition, we should make the necessary changes to our bankruptcy code so that parents who are declaring bankruptcy will be required to pay their child support debts first, instead of last or not at all."

Hoffman said Grassley's work could improve collections for Iowa children by as much as $2.4 million each year. Founded in 1952, The NCSEA represents over 55,000 child support professionals around the country.
