BUTLER COUNTY, IOWA – U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) issued the following statement on the passing of his former colleague, U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.):

“It was a pleasure to serve alongside Senator Kohl. He and I advanced laws to shed sunlight on health care industry payment practices and promote competition in the generic drug market. In working with Senator Kohl on a number of priorities, I witnessed his determination to deliver for the people he represented; he met success with humility,” Grassley said. “Barbara and I are praying for his family.”

Grassley and Kohl helped advance the Balanced Budget Amendment to constitutionally discipline congressional spending. They led efforts in the Senate Aging Committee to fight for accountability and improved patient care in nursing homes. Grassley and Kohl’s bipartisan oversight included the overuse of antipsychotic drugs in nursing homes, as well as private equity ownership of nursing homes.
