The Science Center for Teaching, Outreach and Research on Meteorology (STORM) would receive $1 million in funding and UNI's domestic violence and substance abuse treatment services for women would receive $675,000 under the plan approved today by the Senate Appropriations Committee.
"Federal funding for these projects is an investment in the lives of Iowans," Grassley said. "With this money we can encourage kids to study meteorology and weather science careers as well as help women in underserved populations who are recovering from domestic violence and substance abuse."
Grassley secured initial funding for the STORM Project for Fiscal Year 2000 and has worked to secure additional funding in subsequent years. The $1 million in federal funds approved today would be used to develop a weather science curriculum for students in kindergarten through ninth grades. Grassley said the materials would be available for use by teachers nationwide.
The mission of the domestic violence and substance abuse treatment service project is to offer integrated domestic violence and substance abuse treatment services to women in substance abuse treatment who have experienced domestic violence and women in domestic violence shelters who have substance abuse problems.
The bill now awaits debate on the Senate floor.
