Iowa State University has been working with the U.S. Department of Energy to establish the Clean Energy for the Future program. The program would focus on the research and development of new and improved processes for hydrogen generation and materials. Researchers on the project would look at ways to improve efficiency, simplify production and lower the cost of technologies needed for the implementation of a hydrogen-based clean energy economy. The results will serve as a resource for the energy department's hydrogen program efforts.
"By joining the talent and resources of the Ames Laboratory and a number of academic departments and centers at ISU, we can further the development of clean-burning energy alternatives," Grassley said. "Funding for projects like this will help our country gain greater energy independence."
Grassley's letter was sent to Sens. Harry Reid of Nevada and Pete Domenici of New Mexico, who as chairman and ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development are responsible for drafting the federal government's spending plan for energy and water related projects in the next fiscal year. The appropriations process begins each spring and is typically completed at the end of each congressional session.
