Grassley said the nearly 40 year old science facility can no longer meet the needs of an expanding program. Last year, the project received $800,000 in federal funds for equipment and programming costs. Funding this year would be used for construction and equipment needs
.
"The environmental science program at the University of Dubuque is responding the national call for improved training of science professionals," Grassley said. "The program offers a unique learning environment that provides hands-on experience and strict scientific training. In nearly every course, a field laboratory provides direct, applied experiences for all types of students."
Grassley's letter was sent to Sens. Harry Reid of Nevada and Pete Domenici of New Mexico, who as chairman and ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development are responsible for drafting the federal government's spending plan for energy and water related projects in the next fiscal year. The appropriations process begins each spring and is typically completed at the end of each congressional session.
