Funds for the $50 million project would be used for infrastructure costs associated with the development of Iowa's first destination park. The funding would allow organizers to install new sanitation systems, restrooms, bathhouses and boat ramp launching areas.
"Honey Creek Destination Park is an exciting project that will provide high quality outdoor recreation to visitors and give a significant boost to tourism and economic revitalization to the area," Grassley said. "It's success so far is due to the overwhelming public and private support given to the project."
The Honey Creek Destination Park is a joint project of the Rathbun Lake Resort Group, Army Corps of Engineers, the State of Iowa and private sector interests. The 820-acre development sight is owned by the state and federal governments, and managed by the Chariton Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council. When completed, the park will offer a full range of services to support visitors for extended vacations stays. Plans for the park include a guest lodge, cabins, full service dining, docks and recreation trails.
Grassley's letter was sent to Sens. Harry Reid of Nevada and Pete Domenici of New Mexico, who as chairman and ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development are responsible for drafting the federal government's spending plan for energy and water related projects in the next fiscal year. The appropriations process begins each spring and is typically completed at the end of each congressional session.
