Grassley Requests Funding for Pella Water Supply

? In a letter to Senate appropriators, Sen. Chuck Grassley has requested $5 million in fiscal year 2003 funds for the development of a replacement water supply for the city of Pella.

Since the 1920s, Pella has drawn its water from the Des Moines River downstream of the Red Rock Dam. Over the past two years, the city has been working with the U.S. Geological Survey and consultants to evaluate the condition of its water supply. Their analysis found that construction of the dam significantly altered the aquifer along the Des Moines River to the point that it no longer has the capacity to meet the city's water needs.

"This funding will help Pella develop a new well field and preserve the city's infrastructure," Grassley said. "Ensuring an adequate water supply for residents is vital to preserving the quality of life in Pella."

Grassley's letter was sent to Sens. Harry Reid of Nevada and Pete Domenici of New Mexico, who as chairman and ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development are responsible for drafting the federal government's spending plan for energy and water related projects in the next fiscal year. The appropriations process begins each spring and is typically completed at the end of each congressional session.
