RE:    Grassley Schedule

DA:    Monday, May 20, 2013

Here is information about Senator Grassley’s schedule this week.  The Senate is in session.

Senator Grassley is scheduled to meet with Iowans in Washington for the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Iowa Poultry Association, the American College of Emergency Physicians, Churches for Middle East Peace, the Iowa Rural Letter Carriers Association, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, NAPEO, the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association, Heating, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International, the Iowa Corn Growers Association, and the Iowa-Nebraska Equipment Dealers Association.

Senator Grassley will meet with Iowa families visiting Washington from Central City, Cedar Rapids, and Ankeny.

Senator Grassley will be a guest on the public affairs program hosted by Fred Hoffman on KCPS Radio in Burlington, Captain Steve and Tommy Lang on KCJJ Radio in Iowa City, Steve and Dan on WOC Radio in Davenport, Maxine Sieleman on Praise 940 Radio in Des Moines, and Mark Hahn on KSCJ Radio in Sioux City.

Starting Monday, the full Senate will debate the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2013, the farm bill.  Senator Grassley’s reform initiative to focus farm program payments on small- and mid-size farmers is part of the legislative package approved last week by the Senate Agriculture Committee.

On Monday, May 20, at 10 a.m. (ET), the Senate Judiciary Committee will resume its executive business meeting on the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act.  The mark-up is expected to continue through Wednesday.  Senator Grassley will offer additional amendments this week to try to improve the immigration reform proposal and strengthen enforcement of current law.

On Tuesday, May 21, at 10 a.m. (ET), Senator Grassley also will participate in a Senate Finance Committee hearing titled “A Review of Criteria Used by the IRS to Identify 501(c)(4) Applications for Greater Scrutiny.”   Last week, Senator Grassley asked the acting IRS Commissioner and the Treasury Secretary for details on the agency’s move to disclose the targeting of tax-exempt groups for scrutiny and apologize for the targeting at a legal conference, after refusing to fully answer questions about such activity from members of Congress who have been asking about the targeting for more than a year.  Grassley also asked for communications on the issue between the IRS and the White House or other organizations.

On Wednesday, May 22, at 11:30 a.m. (ET), Senator Grassley will meet with a group of 22 students from Kirkwood Community College.

On Thursday, May 23, at 10 a.m. (ET), Senator Grassley will participate in the weekly executive session of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  In addition to immigration reform, the committee may consider the nominations of Patricia E. Campbell-Smith to be a Judge of the United States Court of Federal Claims, Elaine D. Kaplan to be a Judge of the United States Court of Federal Claims, Charles R. Breyer to be a Member of the United States Sentencing Commission, Rachel Elise Barkow to be a Member of the United States Sentencing Commission, and William H. Pryor Jr. to be a Member of the United States Sentencing Commission.

During the Senate recess next Wednesday and Thursday, May 29 and 30, Senator Grassley will hold town meetings in Rockwell City, Fort Dodge, Dakota City, Pocahontas, Emmetsberg, Estherville, Algona, Clarion, and Webster City.  He also will speak at the Kiwanis Club meeting in Jefferson.
