WASHINGTON – Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa today asked CoOportunity Health and state officials to retain all relevant records as he works to understand the federal government’s role in the co-op’s collapse.
“CoOportunity’s failure affects thousands of Iowans and Nebraskans,” Grassley said. “It’s unclear why the federal government didn’t appear to communicate in advance that more funding for CoOportunity wasn’t available. Retaining records will be helpful to retrace communications and achieve accountability for the missteps.”
Grassley wrote to Cliff Gold, chief executive officer of CoOportunity, and Nick Gerhart, commissioner of the Iowa Insurance Division, with his records retention request.
Earlier this week, Grassley asked a series of questions of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services about its role in CoOportunity’s collapse. The agency was responsible for implementing the health care co-ops created under the President’s health care law.
Grassley’s letters today are available here and here.
