Grassley: Senate Appropriations Subcommittee Approves Funding for Cedar Rapids Courthouse; Des Moines Federal Building


? Sen. Chuck Grassley today announced that the Treasury, Postal and General Government AppropriationsSubcommittee has released its final list of projects that will receive funding for the 2002 Fiscal Year. Included in the list is $15.1million for the new federal courthouse in Cedar Rapids and $12 million for repairs and alterations at the Federal Building in Des Moines.

"This is good news for Iowans," Grassley said. "The Cedar Rapids Courthouse is an exciting project and its success so far isdue to the outstanding leadership at the local level. Courtrooms in the new facility will be able to adequately handle the numberof caseloads. The new design also will increase the security and efficiency for people doing business there."

According to the Judicial Conference of the United States, the Cedar Rapids project is number 11 on the list of approvedcourthouses for construction. The current courthouse is 70 years old and has been at full capacity since 1991. Grassley hassupported local efforts to build the courthouse since the mid 1990s. He is a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
