Statement of Senator Chuck Grassley on the vote to redirect funding from Planned Parenthood.
“The questions surrounding Planned Parenthood’s role in the procurement of fetal tissue, in addition to questions surrounding the companies acquiring fetal tissue from the organization, is evidence of the need for oversight. And, the Justice Department’s lack of response to my July 15 letter, certainly makes it appear that the department isn’t doing anything to ensure that organizations like Planned Parenthood are adhering to the law. Today’s vote, which would have at least allowed the consideration of the underlying bill, was a vote to protect taxpayer subsidies for a private entity while serious questions are asked about that organization’s practices. The bill, if enacted, would have ensured that funding remains available for other organizations to provide women’s health services while congressional inquiries regarding Planned Parenthood’s facilitation and procurement of fetal tissue are ongoing.”
