Prepared Statement by Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa
Chairman, Senate Judiciary Committee
Executive Business Meeting
October 8, 2015
Today we have one bill and one nominee on the agenda.
We’ll hold over S. 2123 the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act.
This bill represents a broad bipartisan agreement that quite a few members of this Committee entered into. I want to express my gratitude to Senators Durbin, Cornyn, Whitehouse, Lee, Schumer, Graham, Leahy, Booker, and Scott for their cosponsorship of the bill. I think we have shown that if we are willing to work together, we can reach good outcomes to solve important problems. It took a great deal of work to reach this compromise.
I’m also very pleased that so many organizations from across the political spectrum have voiced support for the bill. Additionally, I want to express my appreciation to Chairman Goodlatte and Ranking Member Conyers for introducing companion legislation in the other body.
We plan to hold a hearing and mark up the bill after we return from recess.
Separately, I believe we can have a voice vote on the nominee Edward Gilmore to be a Marshal for the Northern District of Illinois.
