WASHINGTON – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley released the following statement regarding the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General report that revealed Secret Service personnel had improperly accessed personal information about House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz.

“Unfortunately, this is the last thing the Secret Service needed as it tries to regain the trust of many Americans after a recent scandal-plagued history.  Accessing a person’s records without cause is a very serious violation, whether the victim is the chairman of a congressional committee or anybody else.  Incidents like this are exactly why Americans are scared of and dissatisfied with their government.   It will take more than a little retraining to address this problem. Those responsible need to be held accountable, because behavior like this threatens the very nature of independent oversight of law enforcement.”
