Grassley supports Branstad’s request for federal disaster assistance

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today asked President Obama to grant the request made by Governor Terry Branstad for a federal declaration of a major disaster in response to damaging winds, tornadoes, heavy rains, and thunderstorms resulting in severe flooding at the end of last month through this week.

In a letter sent late today, Grassley said, “The Governor determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the State and affected local governments to handle effectively and federal assistance is needed.”

This severe weather system caused significant damage to both public infrastructure and private property.  Nearly half of Iowa counties suffered severe damage.  The 47 counties included in this disaster declaration request are Appanoose, Benton, Buchanan, Buena Vista, Butler, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Clay, Clayton, Crawford, Davis, Delaware, Des Moines, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Greene, Grundy, Hardin, Henry, Ida, Iowa, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Lyon, Mahaska, Marshall, Mitchell, Monona, Monroe, O’Brien, Palo Alto, Plymouth, Poweshiek, Sac, Sioux, Story, Tama, Wapello, Webster, Winnebago, and Wright.

Here is the text of Grassley’s letter to the President Obama:
