In a letter sent this morning, Grassley asked Secretary Dan Glickman to use his administrative authority to direct the Agriculture Research Service (ARS) to identify, consolidate and transfer funding so research could begin at the center in Ames. This funding would be in addition to the $1 million earmarked for hog odor research in the agriculture appropriations bill conference report approved by Congress.
"USDA has the legal authority to direct federal research dollars to the new research facility in Ames right now. There's $2.2 million available for swine research," said Grassley. "So, in addition to what Congress appropriated for next year's spending bill, I urge the administration to provide additional help to get work started at the swine research center."
Yesterday, Grassley wrote to President Clinton asking him not to veto the agriculture appropriations bill which includes the $1 million for hog odor research. Grassley's letter to Secretary Glickman follows.
