Grassley:  U.S. Military Academy Selects Ames Student

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said today that Hannah Hart Schwartz has received a conditional offer of appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King Point for the 2016-2017 school year.

Schwartz is the daughter of Dr. Colleen Schwartz and Dr. Adam Schwartz of Ames. She will graduate in May from Ames High School. Schwartz is a member of the National Honor Society, the Senior Senate and the Student Ambassadors at Ames High School. She participates in tennis, soccer and swimming in addition to serving her community through her positions as co-director of the Iowa Special Olympics Tennis team and president of the Class of 2016 National Charity League.  Schwartz also enjoys alpine skiing, hiking and photography.

“The academies offer some of the best options for higher education, and they offer an outstanding way to serve our country.  It’s a tremendous opportunity for young Iowans like Hannah,” Grassley said.

Schwartz was among the 41 Iowans Grassley nominated this year for appointments to the U.S. service academies.  Upon receiving an appointment, the student then decides whether to attend the academy.  Information about seeking nominations can be found on Grassley’s website.

A “conditional offer” is “contingent upon receiving a nomination, medical qualification and passing candidate fitness assessment.”

For more than 200 years, these academies have educated and trained individuals to lead and command the U.S. armed forces.
