Grassley Weekly Schedule 10/28/13


Here is information about Senator Grassley’s schedule this week.  The Senate is in session.   


Senator Grassley will meet with Iowans in Washington from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the Iowa Hospital Association, the Cedar Rapids Physician Hospital Association, ProLiteracy, students from the Global Leadership Connection, high school students from Ames High School and River Valley High School in Correctionville,the Director of the Iowa Office of Drug Control Policy, Steve Lukan, and Iowa Sec. of State Matt Schultz.


Senator Grassley will meet with an Iowa family visiting Washington from Moville.


Senator Grassley will be a guest on public affairs programs hosted by Bryan Nichols and Sean Secrease on WTAD in Quincy, Trent Rice on KASI in Ames, Captain Steve and Tommy Lang on KCJJ in Iowa City, and Mike Adams on Agritalk which is broadcast on 12 Iowa radio stations.


On Tuesday, October 29, at 2 p.m. (ET), Senator Grassley will testify at a House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing, “Are More Judges Always the Answer?”  Grassley will talk about the decreasing caseload of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and his legislation to help make the federal court system a more cost efficient entity that uses taxpayer resources wisely. The legislation builds on Grassley’s work in the late 1990s when he led a multi-year effort to study the allocation of resources in the federal courts, and his successful effort to have a judgeship from the D.C. Circuit Courtremoved during the Bush administration.


On Tuesday, October 29, at 3 p.m. (ET), Senator Grassley will attend the memorial service for former Speaker of the House Tom Foley.


On Wednesday, October 30, at 10 a.m. (ET), Senator Grassley will attend a budget conference public meeting.  This will be the first meeting of the House/Senate budget conference committee.  The conference committee will meet to try to find an agreement between the House and Senate in drafting a resolution that tackles the nation’s fiscal challenges, grows the economy and addresses the nation’s growing debt.


On Wednesday, October 30, at 11 a.m. (ET), Senator Grassley will participate in a Finance Committee hearing, “The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership:  Achieving the Potential.”  The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) has the potential to eliminate tariffs and perhaps more importantly non-tariff trade barriers between the United States and the European Union (E.U.).  This hearing will allow witnesses, including representatives from the grain and poultry industries, to talk about their views of the proposed agreement.  This agreement has the potential to open up and streamline the export of more Iowa agricultural products to the E.U.  The E.U. imported $485 billion of goods and services from the U.S. in 2012, which makes it the largest export market for the United States.


On Wednesday, October 30, at 2:30 p.m. (ET), Senator Grassley will participate in a Judiciary Committee hearing on the nominations of John B. Owens to be United States Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit, Matthew Frederick Leitman to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan, Judith Ellen Levy to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan, Laurie J. Michelson to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan, Linda Vivienne Parker to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan, and Peter Joseph Kadzik to be an Assistant Attorney General.


On Thursday, October 31, at 10 a.m. (ET), Senator Grassley will participate in the weekly executive business meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  The committee may consider the nominations of Robert Leon Wilkins to be United States Circuit Judge for the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals, Brian J. Davis to be United States District Judge for the Middle District of Florida, Timothy L. Brooks to be United States District Judge for the Western District of Arkansas, James Donato to be United States District Judge for the Northern District of California, Beth Labson Freeman to be United States District Judge for the Northern District of California, and Pedro A. Delgado Hernandez to be United States District Judge for the District of Puerto Rico.  The committee may also consider S. 42, Criminal Antitrust Anti-Retaliation Act of 2013 sponsored by Senator Patrick Leahy and Senator Grassley, and S.822, Justice for All Reauthorization Act sponsored by Senators Leahy, John Cornyn, Chris Coons, Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken.
