"Wyatt is an outstanding young man. He has worked hard for this opportunity and I'm glad he is being rewarded," Grassley said. "The caliber of young people vying for these positions at the service academies never ceases to amaze me. It's always with great pride that I send the list of young Iowans to the service academies."
In January, Grassley nominated Davis to fill available vacancies for the 2002/2003 school year at West Point.
Grassley said his 2002 nominations were delayed because of the closure of the Hart Senate Office Building. Grassley's office is located in the building, which was shut down for three months due to anthrax contamination. Grassley said he could not access his files while the building was being treated. He completed the nomination process when the building reopened.
According to Grassley, the highly competitive selection process makes it difficult to narrow the list of nominees each year. Grassley praised the outstanding group of Iowa students who applied for academy nominations in past years and encouraged eligible students to consider submitting applications in the future.
Grassley expects additional academy appointments to be offered this year and will issue an announcement once an appointment has been offered.
