Grassleys to Host Reception for Iowans Visiting WWII Memorial

Sen. Chuck and Barbara Grassley said today that they are hosting a reception for Iowans who will be visiting the National World War II Memorial during the Memorial Day Weekend festivities. The reception will be held on Friday, May 28 from 1 – 3 p.m. in room 215 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

"This is such an important event. We wanted to show our gratitude for the service provided by our veterans. We also wanted to provide a venue where Iowans can meet each other away from the hustle and bustle of the formal memorial services," the Grassleys said.

The World War II Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to all who served during the Second World War. The Memorial honors all military veterans of the war, the citizens on the home front, the nation at large, and the high moral purpose and idealism that motivated the nation's call to arms. The Memorial was first authorized by Congress in 1993 and construction began in 2001.

The four-day dedication celebration will focus on the contributions of the World War II generation. Events for the weekend include wartime reminiscences, World War II memorabilia and military equipment displays, and educational activities for all ages.

No reservations are needed to attend the Iowa reception. Iowans can call Sen. Grassley's office in Washington for further information at 202-224-3744. For additional information about the World War II celebration in Washington, D.C., Iowans can visit www.wwiimemorial.com.
