Higher Education

Senator Chuck Grassley issued the following comment regarding Senate passage late last night of the Higher Education Act of 1998. Senators voted in favor of the bill 96 to 1.

A conference committee must now meet to resolve slight differences between the versions of this legislation passed by the Senate and House of Representatives.

"This bill is good news for Iowa college students. It increases the maximum award for Pell grants and allows a student to receive two Pell grants in a single year. This will make it easier for many more young people to afford a college education. The bill also provides funds for students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and gives access to campus-based child care for low-income parents seeking a college education.

"In addition to a wide range of student assistance, the legislation overall works to improve teacher quality, strengthen educational institutions and improve graduate education."
