More Than $1 Million to the University of Northern Iowa

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the University of Northern Iowa has received a $1,081,904 grant from the National Science Foundation.

According to the National Science Foundation, the university will use the money to fund externships for 150 seventh through 12th grade math and science teachers in Iowa.  The externships will be with local science-based industries for six weeks during the summer.  The externs will learn current applications of science and mathematics that they can use to enhance the education of approximately 15,000 students.

The National Science Foundation is a federal agency created by Congress in 1950.

Each year, local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants and loans from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity administering the funds.
