More Than $516.7 Million to Iowa for Disaster Recovery

WASHINGTON — Senator Chuck Grassley today said that Iowa will receive $516,713,868 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The funding comes from the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery program.  This funding is in addition to the $125,297,142 Iowa had previously received under this appropriation.

“Iowans know there is still a lot of work ahead of us after the devastating disasters in 2008,” Grassley said. “These funds will help provide needed resources so Iowans can continue to pick up the pieces of our communities.”

In the action plan submitted by the State of Iowa to HUD, the State has proposed to distribute the grant amount in the following ways for its long-term disaster recovery needs.

• $220 million for housing and commercial property buyouts.

• $125 million for new housing production.

• $70 million for the business assistance program which includes business rental assistance, the loan interest expense program, commercial rental income gap, and residential landlord support.

• $64,662,175 for public infrastructure.

• $1 million for case management.

• $10 million for floodplain mapping.

• $216,000 for the promotion of the National Flood Insurance program.

• $25,835,693 for administration.

The Community Development Block Grants Disaster Recovery program provides flexible grants to help cities, counties, and States recover from Presidentially declared disasters, especially in low-income areas, subject to availability of supplemental appropriations.
