WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded funding totaling $8,314,718 to the Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative, Mason City High School and John Adams Middle School, and Eagle Grove though the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The funds are intended for disaster recovery from the severe storms that occurred from May 24 to August 14, 2008.
“All of these projects should increase the safety of the communities involved and should help them continue to recover from the floods of 2008,” Grassley said.
FEMA will distribute the money as shown below.
• Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative will receive $4,074,184 to retrofit and strengthen 71.78 miles of electric distribution lines in Bremer, Butler, Chickasaw and Floyd counties.
• Mason City High School and John Adams Middle School will receive $1,891,254 to construct a multipurpose safe room within a new addition to the building.
• Eagle Grove will receive $2,349,280 to increase the capacity of the existing overland storm sewer channel and to reduce infiltration of storm water into the septic sewer lines.
FEMA obligates funding for these projects directly to the state. It is the state's responsibility to ensure that the eligible sub-grantees receive these awards. FEMA contributes 75 percent of the total cost of a project. State and local entities contribute the other 25 percent.
