WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded disaster relief funding totaling $9,450,313 to Iowa the through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative will receive $4,787,548 to retrofit electrical distribution lines in order to lessen damage from severe weather. Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative serves Bremer, Butler, Chickasaw and Floyd counties, as well as the Iowa community of Fairbank. Additionally, Hudson Municipal Electric Utility purchases wholesale power from Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative.
Northwest Rural Electric Cooperative will receive $4,662,765 to retrofit electrical distribution lines in order to lessen damage from severe weather. Northwest Rural Electric Cooperative serves Ida, O'Brien, Plymouth, and Sioux counties.
FEMA obligates funding for these projects directly to the state. It is the state's responsibility to ensure that the eligible sub-grantees receive these awards. FEMA contributes 75 percent of the total cost of a project. State and local entities contribute the other 25 percent.
