Nearly $2 Million to Iowa Colleges and School Districts

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded four grants totaling $1,854,903 to Iowa colleges and school districts.

“These programs are intended to increase educational success among Iowa students, from kindergarten to college.  Iowa is known for having a high-quality education system for all students and these funds will help continue that tradition,” Grassley said.

The U.S. Department of Education will distribute the funds as shown below.

• The Davenport Community School District will receive $217,107 from the School Dropout Prevention Program to implement dropout prevention and reentry projects to provide support, enrichment and motivation to students at risk of dropping out or who seek to reenter school.

• The Des Moines Independent Community School District will receive $1,200,507 from the School Dropout Prevention Program to enhance and expand its comprehensive Destination Graduation dropout prevention and school improvement initiative.

• The University of Iowa will receive $292,535 from the Preparation of Leadership Personnel Program to support qualified personnel who work with children with disabilities in special education, related services, early intervention, and regular education.

• The University of Iowa will receive $144,754 from the Rehabilitation Long-term Training – Rehabilitation Counseling Program to support the master’s level vocational rehabilitation counselor education program, which will increase the supply of qualified personnel for vocational rehabilitation employment.

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants and loans from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity administering the funds.
