"There's no excuse for Robert Hanssen's treason, but there's also no excuse for the FBI's failure to take seriously his obvious and repeated security violations. Time and again, the FBI missed red flags. Based on the report, it looks like a combination of arrogance, a lackadaisical attitude about internal security, and a mind set that the FBI could not be penetrated, helped Robert Hanssen commit the worst espionage in FBI history. Like the report says, Hanssen wasn't a master spy. He simply took advantage of easy pickings that were some of the nation's most sensitive security secrets.
"It may be even more alarming that the report found major security deficiencies still in place at the FBI more than two years after Hanssen's arrest. This comes on top of statements made last year by the FBI's top security official, Ken Senser. When I asked him if the FBI thought it could detect another spy, he said, 'I think we're still at substantial risk.'
"Congress needs to keep on the FBI to determine what is being done to prevent another Robert Hanssen. And the FBI must overhaul its own efforts to prevent, deter and detect moles. The national security of the United States is too important for complacency."
