Reaction to President Bush's Address

Senator Chuck Grassley, of Iowa, made this comment following his visit to New York City today and in reaction to President Bush's address to the nation tonight.

"Today I toured the attack site in lower Manhattan. You see smoke, and fires still burn. The pile of rubble is only what you see above ground. There are still five stories below the ground. It's so much worse than what we see on television. It's the kind of devastation and loss of life I hope I never see again in my lifetime.

"President Bush is leading the way and pulling us all together in the fight against terrorism. His speech tonight was very, very important. He focused the nation on where we are, where we're going, and how we're going to get there. His approach is sure-footed and deliberate. He's a sheriff, not a gunslinger. President Bush knows a military response isn't meant to exercise vengeance and retaliation. The purpose of our military response will be to eradicate terrorism. The goal is to ensure the safety of the United States and our allies and bring the terrorists to justice. The President is out to stop terrorism, and we are all behind him."
