WASHINGTON – The Senate yesterday unanimously passed a resolution marking October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The bipartisan measure was introduced by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), and cosponsored by Ranking Member Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.).
“Domestic violence continues to impact the lives of millions of American families, leaving deep physical and emotional wounds. National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an important time to let survivors know that they are not alone and empower them to seek help and rebuild their lives. Passage of this resolution reaffirms our support for the survivors of these crimes and all those who dedicate their lives to helping them heal,” the Senators said.
The resolution commends victim advocates, service providers and first responders for their compassionate support of domestic violence survivors. It also reaffirms Congress’s commitment to ending the crime that affects up to nine million Americans each year.
