"It is disappointing that the Senate at this time failed to finish what it started with this important bill.
"My goal has been a strong bill that works to eliminate youth smoking. That's why I voted to increase the price of cigarettes by $1.50. Research shows that for every 10-cent increase in the price of a pack, 270,000 fewer teenagers will become smokers in the next four years. Even the tobacco companies' own documents state that higher prices mean fewer young smokers.
"I also want to crack down on the tobacco companies. That's why I voted to remove the limits on the compensation that victims can receive from tobacco companies. The tobacco companies do not deserve special protection. The companies misrepresented their products and mislead Congress and the public about the dangers of tobacco use. This change to the bill made sure that tobacco companies will bear responsibility for their actions."
