U.S. Attacks in Sudan & Afghanistan

Sen. Chuck Grassley issued the following comment regarding the President's announcement today that there have been U.S. military attacks in Sudan and Afghanistan. Sen. Grassley is in Winterset this afternoon conducting a town meeting for Madison County residents, following a day of meetings in Des Moines.

"There's no doubt that the United States government must demonstrate zero tolerance for terrorism. The tragic bombings in Africa and even more recent threats against Americans by Osama bin Laden have intensified our awareness of the horror and devastation wrought by international terrorism.

"I hope that today's action was effective in its military calculation and its attack on the terrorist base and plant. There's been a build-up of terrorist networks and facilities internationally among Islamic fundamentalist groups for over two years. And, increased terrorist activity has occurred because we have failed to take appropriate action. The kind of strike we saw today was long overdue. I want to see a sustained fight against terrorism. I will be carefully monitoring developments and consulting with the Defense Department and congressional advisors on the Intelligence and Foreign Relations committees."
