Walker Fire Department to Receive More Than $14,000

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will award a $14,725 grant to the Walker Fire Department through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants program.

The Walker Fire Department will use the funds to purchase a fire hose and a small fire fighting vehicle called a skid unit.

“The safety of our communities depends on firefighters’ ability to access the equipment they need to do their job,” Grassley said. “These funds will help Walker firefighters save lives.”

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Assistance to Firefighters Grants are used to recruit and train firefighters, purchase equipment and improve fire stations and facilities.

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity administering the funds.
