Word On: VITA

Q: What is VITA?

A: Authorized by the Internal Revenue Service, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free tax preparation services for older, disabled, low-income and non-English speaking persons. IRS trained and certified VITA volunteers have helped prepare basic tax returns for taxpayers unable to afford professional tax assistance for more than three decades. In 1999, more than 40,000 VITA volunteers assisted nearly 1.9 million taxpayers at some 8,000 locations nationwide. During the 2002 tax season, VITA and AARP will offer free tax assistance in 43 Iowa counties, setting up office hours in community centers, libraries, churches, schools, shopping malls, and other locations convenient to older members of the community. Folks who take advantage of this confidential tax service also may choose to file their returns electronically, free of charge. The IRS encourages taxpayers to make use of "e-filing," especially for those expecting a refund. The turn-around time is cut in at least half for those filing electronically versus the traditional way. Taxpayers should bring along the following information: local daytime phone number, especially if planning to file electronically; retirement or Social Security benefit statements; interest and dividend statements (1099 forms); wage and earnings statements (W-2 forms); Social Security numbers of all dependents; and last year's tax return. To itemize, don’t forget to bring documents regarding medical and dental expenses; taxes paid; mortgage interest; charitable contributions, and non-reimbursed job expenses.

Q: How can Iowans find the closest tax VITA/AARP tax preparation site?

A: For an IRS-sponsored VITA site, call toll-free (800) TAX-1040 or (800) 829-1040. For the location of an AARP Tax-Aide site in your community, call 1-888-227-7669 or 1-877-227-7844. Be ready to press in or speak your five-digit zip code. For those who have access to the Internet, go to my website at http://grassley.senate.gov and click on VITA sites to find the most convenient location in your area. I encourage seniors who may need help filing their income tax returns to take advantage of this community service. And I applaud hundreds of committed Iowans who volunteer their time and energy to help their neighbors in need during tax season.
