WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a $238,000 competitive grant to the Waterloo Fire Rescue for its Fire PALS program.
"It's important for kids to learn about safety at an early age," Grassley said. "These funds will help Waterloo Fire Rescue continue the Fire Pals program."
According to Waterloo Fire Rescue, Fire Pals implements an injury prevention program into Waterloo's public and parochial elementary schools. This program started as an after-school volunteer program, and is now motivated to meet the goals of the Healthy People 2000-Objectives for the Nation, "Providing academic instruction on injury prevention and control as part of a quality school health education program in at least 50% of the public school systems."
