$622,909 to University of Iowa

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded two competitive grants totaling $622,909 to the University of Iowa.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism granted the university $439,021 to study brain development in adolescents with genetic risk factors for alcoholism.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health granted the university $183,888 to study methods to assess personal exposures to airborne metallic nanoparticles.

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government. The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity administering the funds.
