WASHINGTON — Senator Chuck Grassley today said that $735,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development was released to Humboldt for Brownfields clean-up at the Frit Industries site.
This funding was secured by Grassley in the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill for fiscal 2008.
"These federal funds will help clean-up the contaminated soil and water at the Frit Industries site to comply with Environmental Protection Agency standards and allow Humboldt to demolish the buildings on site and use the area for new interests," Grassley said. "Rehabilitating brownfields improves the environment and allows for new economic development."
During its peak, Frit Industries made additives for the fertilizer industry which we've later learned to be hazardous. The money will help Humboldt continue with clean-up of the site and demolition of the buildings with the owner of the site.
