"Congress has an important role in debating the moral and ethical questions that accompany experiments and discoveries in the laboratory. The question isn't whether or not stem cell research should be outlawed, but whether taxpayers should be asked to pay for embryonic stem cell research, given sincere and thoughtful opposition by those of us committed to the pro-life movement.
"The President has deliberated carefully and made his decision. I will strongly urge his administration and my colleagues in Congress to expand federally supported research on stem cells from adult tissue, placentas, and blood from umbilical cords. These alternatives to embryonic stem cell research have not been fully developed and could contribute to groundbreaking research on devastating diseases."
