WASHINGTON - Senator Chuck Grassley today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is providing grants totaling $372,634 to Iowa through the COPS Universal Hiring Program.

The grant funds provide up to 75 percent of the total salary and benefits of each new officer for three year with the remainder to be paid by state or local funds. The funds are intended to enhance the community policing capacity of local law enforcement agencies that have a combination of high crime rates and a low officer to citizen ratio as reported through the national Uniform Crime Report.

The funds will be distributed by the U.S. Department of Justice as described below.

v Keokuk will receive $147,634.

v Ottumwa Police Department will receive $225,000.
