Grassley: $430,348 to the University of Northern Iowa from U.S. Department of Education

WASHINGTON – Senator Chuck Grassley announced today that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $430,348 grant to the University of Northern Iowa’s College of Education through the Fund for the Improvement of Education Awards Program.

“These funds will help the University of Northern Iowa continue its rich tradition in producing great teachers across the state,” Grassley said.

The University of Northern Iowa will use the grant to funds to continue its successful 2 + 2 teacher education demonstration program that delivers instruction to place bound Iowans who cannot come to the university campus. Students in the program take two years at a partner community college and then the equivalent of two years through the University of Northern Iowa. The courses are taught by University of Northern Iowa instructors delivered on community college campuses, over the state’s interactive fiber optics network or through web-based courses.

The Fund for the Improvement of Education Awards Program provides grants to assist in designing and implementing character education programs that can be integrated into classroom instruction, are consistent with state academic content standards, and can be carried out in conjunction with other educational reform efforts.
