WASHINGTON - Senator Chuck Grassley today announced that Iowa State University and the University of Iowa have received grants totaling $867,154 from the National Science Foundation.
“Both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa have had long traditions of excellent research,” Grassley said. “These funds will allow both universities to continue in that tradition.”
The National Science Foundation has awarded funds to facilitate projects, as described below.
· Iowa State University will receive $342,500 to help fund a project titled “MRI: Acquisition of Terahertz Ray Research Facility.” The research will study Terahertz rays, which have emerged as one of the most promising energy forms for measurement in a variety of applications in science and engineering.
· The University of Iowa will receive $524,654 to help fund a project titled “Dynamics of Gene Expression During Vegetative Phase Change in Maize.” The research will examine the prominent differences in maize between juvenile and adult leaves with respect to the levels of lignin, which can interfere with cellulosic ethanol production. The project will use unique technology in which adult plants can be rejuvenated.
