WASHINGTON- Senator Chuck Grassley today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) is providing community policing grants, training, publications, best practices, and technical assistance to state, local, and tribal law enforcement.
“These funds will help
Iowa ’s law enforcement communities improve public safety,” Grassley said. “These are good programs directed toward important initiatives like school safety and drug enforcement. I encourage any eligible state and local agencies to apply for this funding.”
Details and deadlines for the COPS grant opportunities are described below. More information can be found at www.cops.usdoj.gov.
· Tribal Resources Grant Program provides funds to tribal law enforcement agencies to purchase equipment and technology to improve public safety capabilities in Indian Country. This solicitation is now open, and applications are due by June 13.
· Secure Our Schools provides funds to law enforcement agencies to partner with schools to purchase safety equipment, staff and student training and other security improvements. This solicitation is now open to any state, local or tribal law enforcement agency and applications are due by June 13.
· Universal Hiring Program provides funds to law enforcement agencies to hire additional community policing officers in communities of 500,000 or greater, all federally recognized tribes with populations of 10,000 or greater and agencies of all sizes experiencing high violent crime rates. At least four jurisdictions per state are invited to apply. This solicitation is now open and applications are due by June 20.
· Methamphetamine Initiative provides funds to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies for implementing community policing responses to problems of crime or disorder related to methamphetamine production, distribution, and use. This solicitation is targeted, and applications are due by June 20.
· COPS Technology Program provides funds to state, local and tribal law enforcement for technological enhancements to improve public safety. This solicitation is targeted, and applications are due by June 27.
· Child Sexual Predator Program provides funds to support local efforts to locate, arrest, and prosecute child sexual predators and exploiters. This solicitation will be targeted to at least two law enforcement agencies per state, and applications are due by July 1.
