Grassley Announces COPS Grant

Sen. Chuck Grassley today announced that The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) of the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded a grant to an Iowa community to be used under the program's Universal Hiring Program. According to Grassley, the city of Waverly will receive $75,000 to create one full-time police officer position.

"I know that having additional police officers is important to people who live in Waverly," Grassley said. "Safety and crime are serious concerns in many towns across the state, and anything that we can do to protect our communities is essential."

Under the COPS program, grants are made for up to 75 percent of the total salary and benefits of each new officer over three years, and up to a maximum of $75,000 per officer, with the remainder to be paid by state or local funds.

The COPS program is one of several approaches by the Department of Justice to deploy additional officers devoted to community policing on the street and rural routes of this nation.
