Grassley Announces More Money to Low-Income Iowans

Sen. Chuck Grassley issued a comment regarding the additional federal dollars released today to help low-income Iowans heat their homes. Iowa will receive $493,463 in addition to the $1.6 million provided last week through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program known as LIHEAP.

"The cost of keeping warm in severe winter weather can put a deep freeze on many Iowans' pocketbooks, especially those who live on fixed incomes, the elderly and the disabled. During the last decade, LIHEAP has helped to keep many families from choosing between heating their homes or putting food on the table."

Assistance levels through LIHEAP are based on the following criteria: household income; household size; type of heating fuel; and type of housing. Other factors considered include elderly or handicapped households and households with young children.

The one-page application may be obtained at any of Iowa's 19 community action agencies located in Carroll, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Creston, Marshalltown, Remsen, Des Moines, Mason City, Decorah, Dubuque, Waterloo, Indianola, Leon, Burlington, Ottumwa, Graettinger, Harlan, Sioux City, and Webster City. Applicants must furnish their Social Security number, a copy of their most recent energy bill, and proof of income. To qualify, a household of four must fall below a $24,075 annual gross income, or a three-month gross income of $6,018.75.

For more information, Iowans can contact the administrating office in Des Moines at the Department of Human Rights, Capitol Complex, 515/281-4204.
